September Home Maintenance Reminders: Prepare Your Home for Fall

As the cooler months approach, September is the perfect time to get your home ready for fall. This month, we’ve compiled a list of essential tasks to keep your home clean, safe, and efficient. From interior cleaning to outdoor maintenance, these tips will help you prepare for the seasonal shift.

1. Disassemble Your Coffee Maker

Coffee makers can build up mineral deposits and residue over time, affecting the flavor of your brew. Disassemble your coffee maker for a thorough cleaning, following the manufacturer’s instructions. A clean machine will ensure a fresh start to your mornings.

Consider doing a flush cycle with watered-down vinegar to kill organic or purchasing Descaler Tablets that clean lime and hard water buildup in the lines.

2. Pull Out Large Appliances and Furniture

Dust, crumbs, and debris can accumulate behind and underneath large appliances and furniture. Take the time to move them and give these areas a deep clean. You might be surprised at what’s been hiding out of sight!

3. Wash Interior Windows

Summer dust and grime can dull your windows. Washing them now will let more light into your home as the days get shorter. Use a streak-free cleaner and microfiber cloth for the best results.

4. Clean Exterior Appliances

Outdoor appliances, like grills or patio refrigerators, have likely seen heavy use over the summer. Give them a good cleaning to remove grease and grime, ensuring they’re ready for storage or further use.

Our favorite cleaners for grills are Goo Gone Grill and Grate Cleaner Spray.

For patio furniture, use Mold Armor E-Z House Wash. The active ingredient will kill organics that have built up on your outdoor furniture. Simply coat the entire furniture with E-Z House Wash, allow 15 minutes of dwell time, and then rinse off with a spray nozzle.

5. Wash & Replace Bedding

Fall is the perfect time to refresh your bedding. Wash all your linens, and consider replacing summer bedding with warmer blankets and duvets for the cooler nights ahead.

6. Tackle the Junk Drawer

We all have that one drawer where odds and ends seem to collect. Take a few minutes to sort through your junk drawer, tossing what you no longer need and organizing the rest. You’ll be surprised how much space you can reclaim and how satisfying the end results can be.

Use organizers to give all your items a proper place.

7. Mow and Aerate Your Lawn

Before the grass goes dormant for the winter, give it one last mow. Aerating your lawn this month will also help oxygen, water, and nutrients reach the roots, setting your lawn up for healthy growth in the spring.

8. Check Your HVAC Filter

Your HVAC system works hard year-round. Make sure it's running efficiently by checking and replacing your filter if necessary. A clean filter improves air quality and helps your system run more efficiently.

Air Filters should be changed every 90 days. Consider creating a subscription purchase on Amazon for every 3-6 months (depending on the number of filters you need in your home).

9. Vacuum or Dust the Refrigerator Condenser Coil

Dust can build up on your refrigerator's condenser coil, making it work harder to keep your food cold. Vacuum or dust the coils to help your fridge run more efficiently and extend its lifespan.

10. Inspect Your Fire Extinguisher

Safety first! Check the pressure gauge on your fire extinguisher to ensure it’s in the green zone. Replace or service it if necessary, so you’re prepared in case of an emergency.

It's always good to have a fire extinguisher near the kitchen, in bathrooms where high power draw item my get plugged in, and in the laundry room.

11. Interior Gutter Cleaning

Make sure to pay attention to your interior gutters! Clearing debris from inside the gutter system helps prevent clogs that can lead to leaks or water damage. Make this part of your regular cleaning routine to avoid costly repairs down the line.
